Each Iron is Tapered, and custom ground, then fitted to the mortise and sole profile. This is a very critical step in plane making, as it prevents the iron from slipping while in use as its opposing wedge holds it in place, and will actually tend to tighten under the pressure of cutting. It also serves to protect the wedge as it releases the iron and wedge when struck at the tang. Therefore, the wedge should never need to be overpowered to be removed. |
